“We made history.” said senior Jayden Bibbs after he led Bowie High School to their first ever back-to-back 8-6A District Championship.
In the heated matchup against South Grand Prairie, Bowie prevailed, winning 24-21. Bibbs, Bowie’s’starting quarterback, finished the game completing 29 of 38 passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 63 yards.
Keidric Osunde-Brown was the leading receiver getting 113 yards. Bibbs threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to star receiver Maxwell Nichols in the first quarter, an 8-yard touchdown pass to Brody Ferguson, and a 20-yard touchdown pass to Derion Carson.
His performance was crucial in orchestrating the drives that allowed Bowie to match and eventually overcome an undefeated and favored South Grand Prairie team, securing the district title. Bibbs said his performance in the playoffs last year proved to his coaches that they can trust him in crucial situations.
Even though SGP was favored to win, Bibbs said, “We focus on ourselves. We don’t focus on outside noise. We knew that if we came in and did our job we would come out with the win.”
Bowie’s defense also played a huge role in the game. Holding SGP’s offense to zero points in the first half. South is known for blowing out their opponents.
The Vols’ defense got off to a great start thanks to senior Kyle Smith, catching an interception in the first quarter. Senior Princeton Campbell also caught an interception in the endzone, ending SGP’s hopes of scoring.
Senior Bryson Castille the 3-star Houston commit, played a huge factor in the game getting over 10 tackles while picking up a few sacks as well. The Bowie defense made consecutive tackles for a loss near the goal line, forcing South to attempt a field goal, which was missed.
“We came to play!” said Bowie Head Coach Joseph Sam..
“Gotcha!” said Sam as he was asked what he had to say to the people who picked SGP over Bowie. This is the first time in program history that Bowie has ever won an undefeated district championship back-to-back.
“Our theme for the week was having the will to win,” Sam said. “Somebody’s will has to be greater than the other. Our will has to be greater than theirs. They showed that tonight and we got the victory.”
Bowie’s upset victory not only solidified their dominance in the district but also showcased the growth and perseverance of this team.
Next week the Vols will host a playoff game at Choctaw Stadium on Friday, Nov. 14 at 7pm. Their opponent is still unknown.
