It’s just a few more weeks until Bowie’s prom night takes place, which means it’s time for students to dress their best.
Lucky enough for three years now, members from the Mission Haven Rediemed Foundation clothing store have offered brand new dresses and clothes for students attending prom. All students have to do is visit Bowie Bookkeeper Linda Cameron’s office right next to the main office. There they will find two racks of prom dresses ready for the taking.
For free.
These donations are all thanks to Addy Provence, the CEO of the non-profit organization Mission Haven Rediemed Foundation.
Provence actually has some history with Bowie, having graduated in 1997. She attended Venture High School to obtain her senior year credits doing night school while working numerous jobs during the day. During her freshman and part of my sophomore years, she was an athletic trainer.
“I loved it,” Provence said. “I did not go to prom or participate in any senior year events, which is why I started the prom dress donations. I don’t want a lady to miss prom because she doesn’t have a dress.”
While she loves helping out students with their appearance, she likes to help out people in other ways. Last year Provence supplied food for Bowie’s faculty and staff for Teacher Appreciation supplying Cowboy Chicken for over 300 staff.
“We also provided over 300 handwritten letters and prayers of encouragement along with the other gifts,” Provence said.
She also works as a family nurse practitioner, meaning that she has some specific certifications for emergency nursing for adults and pediatrics. She also works a few hours each week at Open Arms in Arlington as a NP, but that is also volunteer work.
So whenever you go to prom dancing or partying your heart out, realize that your clothes aren’t just for looks but for people to know that you are proud to be here as a Bowie student.
“Bowie has my heart,” Provence said. “I admire the administration and teachers so much at Bowie. The students here are amazing!”
