Macy Nguyen used to be afraid to talk to people. Not anymore. The more she got involved, the more comfortable she got. Nguyen is the BHS senior class president. I spoke with her about what it is like being senior class president and her plans for the rest of the year. Here are some of her answers.

Vol’s Voice: What made you want to be senior class president?

Nguyen: Anything with positions, such as Key Club or class president, before I run I think about what I can do. I saw how I could change the class to be more connected and to just let everyone have a great experience. That’s just what pushed me to be class president and luckily I’m here and I’m having a lot of fun.

Vol’s Voice: Did you have any prior leadership roles?

Nguyen: Yes, so this is my fourth year with the Key Club. I was a freshman board director and then the secretary and now I’m vice president. I’ve also been an officer for orchestra and at church as well.

Vol’s Voice: How was it like to be a leader with other groups? 

Nguyen: It was great seeing people grow because I was there for so many years and it’s great to see how everyone is just changing and seeing how they’re coming from being quiet to stepping out of their comfort zone.

Vol’s Voice: What is it like being senior class president?

Nguyen: It’s like an on-call job. That’s what I tell a lot of people, and a lot of times there’s so much paper work and I get a lot of texts and calls. But most of the time, I get to meet a lot of great people and I’m not scared to talk to anyone anymore.

Vol’s Voice: Is it stressful?

Nguyen: Yes, especially during the big events like homecoming. That was a lot.

Vol’s Voice: So, exactly, what does a class president do?

Nguyen: I run a lot of meetings with my officers to make sure that everyone is doing their role. I have everyone as teams and I try not to do everything because I’ll burn myself out. The officers are there for a reason so I make sure that they’re doing their jobs. I also communicate with Mr. Jones a lot.

Vol’s Voice: So, you’re like a part of the staff?

Nguyen: In a way, yes.

Vol’s Voice: What are some highlights this year as class president?

Nguyen: Seeing how our events pay off. Especially during Food Exemption, or big events like that. Whenever I can lay out all of the profits that I got, I was really happy to hear. And homecoming was definitely a big hit. I enjoyed it a lot, and just being there, setting up and then seeing how much fun people had, it was quite rewarding.
