The halls reek of mildew as the long worn out yellow lights flicker on and off. The walls brim with dread while the officers close off the 400 hall with police tape. Bad things tend to happen in this town; soon Sal will face this revelation himself.
Sally Face is a psychological horror game developed by Portable Moose which follows the shift Sal Fischer faces in his life. He moves to Addison Apartments with his father after a tragic accident in his home town. He befriends fellow teenagers including Larry Johnson, Todd Morrison, and Ashley Campbell. Together, they investigate the strange happenings of the town with a little extra help.
The formatting of the game allows players to move around the different settings and interact with the residents of Nockfell. The style can be described as gritty, mimicking the old drawing style of early 90’s cartoons. This shifts to a more grotesque, realistic style whenever the story calls for such imagery, which is often.
Sal and his friends are self-described outcasts. Sal is the new kid who doesn’t talk much, and has to wear a prosthetic face throughout the story. His best friend, Larry, loves rock music and dresses in a grunge style, while maintaining a laid back personality. Overall, however, it’s clear that the town is strange, with many residents having an uncanny personality revealed through their dialogue.
The indie game Sally Face captures the feeling of being in an unfamiliar new town while also creating a thrilling, dread-filled plot with an engaging and intriguing cast of characters.
