Clapping, cheering, watching in awe. These were signs of another successful rehearsal for the new Anastasia play at Bowie, and senior Constance Watkins knew that she could get the leading role of Anastasia.
“I wouldn’t say it’s a perfect role,” she said. “But I do think that I did well given how short the rehearsals were.”
Bowie’s version of the Anastasia musical started on Oct.28 and 29 with two performances on Nov.1. However rehearsals for the show started in early September with six weeks to prepare. Which means that students were either really exhausted from working behind the scenes, or really amped up for how the final play was going to turn out.
But for Junior Jacziry Angle, who played as an ensemble member, she felt like most of the cast wasn’t giving it their all.
“Some people were tired,” Angle said. “I felt like that caused most of the actors to not project enough.”
While working on the play might seem like a hassle, it doesn’t take away from the fact that the student performers came together to make something incredible. In the end, over 40 students worked on the play, including stage manager Asia Austin, who also put in the same number of hours.
Working on plays and stories like this takes a lot of time and effort from everyone involved, meaning students spend countless hours creating the world where the story takes place. Without the set, lights, costume and sound you would not be able to fully immerse your audience into this other world.
“Theatre is a true collaborative artform,” Theater Director Joy Trimble stated. “It is something that takes a full commitment of time and effort from all participants to be able to produce a quality production.”
